The blue and white shield bears a blue band diagonnally placed from the left top corner to the right bottom corner. On this band are set three golden pistoles, each bearing a blue fleur-de-lis.

On top of this shield is set, biased, a knight's helmet, with a grille. This helmet is marked with pieces of blue decorative fabrics. On top are twisted blue fabrics and a golden ermine; on it is a common eider viewed from the side.

The three pistoles decorated with a fleur-de-lis refer to the place where Jean Riou, ancestor of the Riou and Rioux families, settled. The shield suggest a marine environment, referring to the maritime past of this Breton and his family, who will live in tight contact with a river large as the ocean, the Saint Lawrence. The royal blue is used to refer to the title of «Seigneur des Trois-Pistoles» worn by Jean Riou and the numerous «Seigneurs» of his descendancy.

The motto « Là ou ailleurs » (There or Elsewhere) is an indication of the flexibility and the great adaptability of the Riou and Rioux in America.
